Why am I getting an "incorrect numeric value or format" error when trying to add HTML to a numeric field like price?

Version: 4.x, 5.0.x
Platform: ALL

I'm trying to change the way a number is displayed by adding HTML into the field under Product > Edit Product Info. For example, when I add 1,450.00 in the Price field and select Save Changes, I get the following error message:

"Error
There is an incorrect numeric value or format in one of your fields.
Please check for invalid characters and misplaced punctuation and try again."

Solution ID: S04196

HTML formatting is not permitted in any of the numeric fields. This is to allow uniform storage in the database for locale formatting and cart calculations that require these fields.
Limited options to change the look of fields like the price and SKU fields are available under the Edit Product Layout screen. Additional changes may be incorporated through use of ShopSite's other customizing features: OrderAnywhere, custom templates, or Custom Pages (in ShopSite Pro).
