Why isn't the Smart Tag information in my Custom Pages displaying correctly?

The Smart Tag information in my Custom Page isn't showing up where it's supposed to be. What's wrong?

Solution ID: S04166

Certain Smart Tags must be the first text on a line in the source file. They can be preceded by spaces and followed by other tags, but they must be the first text.
Check the problem Smart Tag in ShopSite under Merchandising > Custom Pages > select page > Edit Page. If it isn't the first text on the line, this solution may apply. Add a carriage return and then publish the store to resolve.

NOTE: The Publish tab does not pop up when you upload/update Custom Pages. You can still click its location, even when it is hidden, and ShopSite will update your store.
