This is how the subproducts feature was designed. An Example:
Say you're selling Root Beer. You sell root beer in various forms: can, six-pack, 12-pack, and 2-liter. So you would create five products: "Root Beer", "Can", "Six-pack", "12-pack", and "2-liter". You would then assign: "Can", "Six-pack", "12-pack", and "2-liter" as subproducts to "Root Beer".
You don't want any of your customers to buy "Root Beer" - they *must* specify one of the subproducts. If there is a case where you DO want to allow the shopper to purchase the parent products, then either create a separate product of the same name just for that individual product, or assign the product to be a subproduct of itself.
