My store uses Custom Templates. Why won't a regeneration / publish complete after upgrading to 5.x?

I created Custom Templates for my store and have used them without problems. I recently tried to upgrade to 5.x, but I'm unable to complete a publish in my upgraded store. The browser just spins (hangs) until it times out.

New line characters can be different depending on where the file is created (i.e. PC, Mac, or Unix). A change was made to the handling of new line characters to improve performance in 5.x. As a result of this change, a side effect was discovered. In 5.x, the last line of each template must now be terminated with a new line character.
To see if this solution applies, make a backup of your current templates. Edit the end of the last line in each template by adding a return so the last line becomes a blank line. Save the file and publish. If the publish completes, this should allow you to continue using your Custom Templates in 5.x.
